Sustainable health

Here at Warrnambool Osteopathic Clinic, Dr Anna Brown is passionate about sustainable health.

Sustainable health means several things.

It means creating health for an enjoyable life for the long term, without requiring too much input or excessive output.

It means making sure that our body is healthy, but also that the environment in which we live is healthy.

It means we can feel good about how our actions affect the others around us, both close by and far away, and feeling good is always great for our health.

So what does this mean for Warrnambool Osteo Clinic?

The very foundations of osteopathy were built on the principle that our body wants to be healthy, and its natural state is to be well-functioning and full of nutrients and energy. At its core, Osteopathy is a sustainable profession, as it aims to simply remove any impediments and allow the body to do exactly what it’s supposed to do. But there are also some very specific actions that have been taken to make sure that coming for a treatment here can have positive impacts on the world as well as your muscles, joints, and nervous system.

Electricity - We have installed solar panels so 100% power for the clinic comes from a renewable resource through daylight hours. They’ve only just gone on to the roof, so feel free to ask Dr Anna about them - she’s excited to nerd out about solar energy at any given opportunity.

Water - We’re in the process of researching water tanks to be installed, so that as much as 90% water for the year can come from the sky, instead of dragging it out of springs from far away.

Products stocked at the clinic - Anna has spent hours, possibly days, of her life researching ethical, sustainable, low-waste options for products that can help you maintain the effects of treatment at home if you require them. Anna is a keen gardener, and is working on growing her own ingredients for healthy, organic muscle creams and sports rubs, with a zero-carbon footprint.

Waste - all food scraps, paper and cardboard produced at the clinic gets composted, or used in the worm farm, to go back into the soil eventually as beautiful, nutrient-rich food for plants and little critters.

The space around the clinic - when you arrive for your appointment, hopefully one of the first things you’ll notice will be the flowers at the front. Anna has planted these very specifically to encourage native insects and provide food for native bees, while discouraging pests such as mosquitoes. As well as being a great food source for small creatures, they’re also lovely to look at. As with the solar panels, Anna is always excited to chat about gardening, food forests and biodiversity with anyone who’ll listen.

With such a great garden at the clinic, Anna has been working hard to grow fruit trees and other herbs and flowers. Look out for any bunches of flowers decorating the desk in the treatment room, or fresh seasonal fruit at Warrnambool Osteo Clinic, as they will have come direct from the garden.

Living in Warrnambool, locals can’t help but be aware of how important it is to look after our environment. Whether watching the whales swim by, or simply walking past one of the many beautiful gardens near the clinic, Anna has been truly inspired to make sure that her work has no negative impact on the future of our wonderful surrounds, and to aim for having a net positive impact. She works hard to ensure that the waste that is necessary for keeping a clean and compliant health clinic is more than offset by actions elsewhere.
